Community Council Minutes (2018-03-13)

Community Council Meeting, March 13, 2018, 5:30-7:00

Present:

Tracy Sutton, Carlene Sommers, Mary Jo Williams, Julie Farr, Shane Campbell, Alisa Buchanan, Jason Hyer, Phyllis Vudivadhana

Absent:

Dina Blue, Michelle Gerritsen, Ryan Gentry

Minutes:

•Review & Ratify Minutes

*Jason Hyer, 1st.  Shane Campbell, 2nd.  Motion passed unanimously.

•Project Lead-the-Way (PLTW) Presentation by Matte Patterson (District Curriculum Specialist) and Jayna Frost (teacher at Green Acres Elementary)

*There are currently 13 elementary schools in the district who are working with this program. One school, Green Acres Elementary, has full implementation while the other schools are in varying degrees of implementation. This program is supported by Weber School District; the district likes schools to have a focus.
*A benefit from this program is increased engagement. All students can learn to “stay in the struggle” and think outside the box. The program is founded on engineering principles and STEM curriculum. It can be incorporated into all aspects of instruction.
*PLTW is a foundational set of courses with 24 modules ranging from kindergarten to 5th grades. Modules are taught during the day by classroom teachers. The robotics portion is optional. All modules are activity, problem and project based learning.
*STEM modules help students with critical thinking skills and promotes a growth mindset.
*During the first year, two teachers would be trained and the whole school would implement the same Kindergarten module in order to be introduced to the program. After that, more teachers could be trained and modules for each grade would be purchased. It would be a total cost of approximately $10,000 with $750 each year after.
*Training is offered through WSU and Weber Innovation Center.
*It can be integrated into what we are already doing. There is longevity with this program with the extended Gateway in middle school and high school.
*Have there been changes in test scores? Nothing concrete. There has been elevated enrollment in Honors math courses in junior high, but a new math program was also implemented that could also have affected this growth.
*Teachers and parents have to be the ones to spearhead this program. District and principal mandates don’t work for full  implementation and teacher buy-in.
*Funding could come from Trust Lands or fundraisers. It’s possible to apply for a grant from the Weber Foundation for matching funds up to $5,000.
*This program would provide for good Public Relations with the community. Some committee members feel that we need to promote our school more and this would give us a good platform.
*Teachers would like to see the kits and what they contain as well as seeing some of the lesson plans. Green Acres uses some of their PLC time to plan and implement these modules.

•Trustlands Plan (2018-2019)

*Completed and submitted.

•Proposed Meeting Schedule for 2017-2018 school year

*April 17

Next meeting:

*April 17, 2018 @5:30 p.m. in the school library

-Ideas for things to show the community what we are doing as a school.
