Community Council Minutes (2015-10-27)

Community Council Meeting, October 27, 2015 (pdf)

Present:

Shane Campbell, Jason Hyer, Casi Parker, Tracy Sutton, Dan Thompson, Carlene Sommer, Mary Jo Williams, Phyllis Vudivadhana

Absent:

Tami Smith, Alisa Buchanan, Michelle Gerritsen

Minutes:

•2014-2015 Budget:

*A frustrating thing about this budget is that it is ever changing and we don’t know how much money from year to year will be allocated. Our allocation keeps decreasing because our student population is decreasing.

-5 math aids $6,766
-2 Tier II reading aids $25,826
-4 FAME instructors $6,649 (this has dropped to three this year)
-PE: $00 (subsidized by the district)
-Computer aid $ 6, 238

•Prosperity 2020

*Midland’s main focus is on attendance. We have an aid that “checks in and out daily” with about 12 students to provide positive feedback and incentives for attendance. We have an aid that calls families of students who are missing each day. This money was left over from the money given last year by the Hall family and the legislature to help increase graduation rates at Roy High School.

•2014-2015 Progress Report

*Reading Goal: SAGE was an unknown number last year since it was so new, but we went ahead and set a goal, DIBELS was more concrete. There are no penalties for not achieving goals, but they give schools something to shoot for.
*Americorp: continues to assist students in grades 4-6 with reading. The coordinator garners help from the community and businesses. We currently have employees from Winegars volunteering as part of their paid time at work. She has also worked hard to get other volunteers from the community.

•Test information: discussed DIBELS and SAGE scores. We want to be sure that we are putting our money in the best places for student academic achievement. Writing is an area of concern.

•Utah State Office of Education website → DATA Gateway:

*Can look at SAGE test scores from schools all over the state, PACE and School Grading Report (compiled using growth and proficiency).
School demographics are also available on the PACE report

•Discussed Survey of Extra-Curricular Activity Ideas - The biggest challenge is getting volunteers that will show up consistently. Our school already provides after school music, but it would be nice to do more.

*What do we do with the survey results?
*Would we have to have background checks for volunteers?
*Can we get people from the library or fitness gyms to help?
*What resources are available in our community?
*Is it okay to ask for a nominal fee?
*Car pools?

•Amend Rules of Order and Procedure:

*Voting - Someone has asked if we can do ballots in order to make voting more private. We will change this in our Orders and Procedures. We can e-mail or do ballot voting. Motion to amend rules of order and procedure to include voting by ballot - Jason Hyer. Seconded by Tracy Sutton. No one was opposed

•Meetings:

*December 1st, January 12th and February 16th. All meetings are on Tuesday and begin at 5:00PM

Next Meeting:

•December 1st @5:00 p.m.
