Community Council Meeting, February 16, 2016 (pdf)

Present:

Shane Campbell, Jason Hyer, Casi Parker, Tracy Sutton, Dan Thompson, Carlene Sommer, Alisa Buchanan, Michelle Gerritsen, Mary Jo Williams, Phyllis Vudivadhana

Absent:

None

Minutes:

•Digital Citizenship Responsibility and Internet Filtering Provisions:

* The district has taken responsibility for filtering electronic devices for the district; at this time only a very select few students are able to take any devices home.
* The district blacklists sites that can be inappropriate, malicious e-mails, redundancies, etc.
* There are three layers of security in addition to firewalls; filtering occurs by grade and school level.
* Social media-utube, pinterest, etc. Some are blocked, some are not; district can’t block personal devices brought from home that have data linked to them, they don’t need our internet access.
* CIPA: Child Internet Protection Act- teaches the thoughtful and responsible use of technology; we used to use the “net safe videos” but have moved to Common Sense media for lesson plans that are more relevant and grade specific/appropriate. They have detailed lesson plans, handouts assessments, etc.
* The few devices that are sent home are rerouted through Google Chrome and through the district site.
* In this way Weber is covering the Community Council’s responsibility for digital devices.

•After School Programs:

* too much money for us to implement
* outside contacts have pulled back
* should Community Council be the one to drive it?
* we don’t feel that PTA is robust enough to implement it
* funding issue: getting people to over-see it
* Mr. Kolb is willing to do gardening with students. He works at Lowe's and has resources. Jason will talk with him to see if we can proceed.
* Math/Science Olympiad instruction/practice will be given to students before and after school in March.
* check into setting up an art class for April
* do we want a sub-committee to head some of these?

•Finalize the 2016-2017 Trust Lands Plan:

* Set the goal for students to reach DIBELS benchmark at 85%; Alisa Buchanan motioned, Tracy Sutton seconded.
* Additional Funding Goal = Decrease absences by 10%; Jason Hyer motioned, Casi Parker seconded
* Vote on 2016-2017 Trust Lands Plan – all were in favor of it.

•PLCs for next year

* PLCs will happen weekly next year; Mary Jo is looking at bringing in someone to do music instruction in place of composers. She hopes to get PLC’s started the second week of school. She is working out the final schedule details.

Next Meeting:

•March 8th @5:00PM
